I detail cars year-round across Snohomish, Monroe, Lake Stevens, Everett, Marysville, and Duvall. People always ask "is it worth doing it now?" The answer depends on the season — here's the breakdown.
The Two Best Times
If you only detail twice a year, do it in April–May and September–October. Spring strips off the winter damage, fall locks in protection before the rain returns. These are also when your car looks the best after a detail because we're between the worst contamination seasons.
Month-By-Month Guide
March – May (Spring Recovery)
Winter leaves road salt, calcium chloride, and acidic grime on your paint and undercarriage. By March, your car is carrying months of damage. Spring is when paint correction shows the biggest improvement — every swirl mark and water spot from winter washing comes out. Pollen also peaks in May, so a post-pollen detail in late May is gold.
June – August (Summer Maintenance)
Tree sap, bird droppings, and bug splatter season. UV is strongest now, so this is the best time to apply ceramic coating or wax for max protection. Heat helps products bond properly. If you go camping or boating, plan a detail when you get back — that stuff bakes onto the paint fast.
September – October (Fall Prep)
This is the smartest detail of the year for PNW drivers. You want fresh paint protection BEFORE the rain returns and stays for 6 months. A sealed, polished, waxed car going into winter is way easier to maintain than one that goes in already neglected. Also leaf sap and tree debris hit hard October–November.
November – February (Winter Damage Control)
Most people skip detailing in winter — that's actually a mistake. Road salt and brake dust are eating your paint and wheels constantly. A winter detail won't last as long visually, but it removes contamination that causes long-term damage. Interior detailing is huge in winter too — wet floors, salt residue, and that musty closed-up car smell are at their worst.
Bad Times To Detail (Honest Take)
- Right before a road trip: Detail AFTER, not before. Bug splatter and highway grime will undo it.
- Right before pollen drop in May: Wait until pollen finishes if you can.
- During heavy rain stretches: Exterior work still gets done, but you'll get more visible benefit if we time it around a dry stretch.
What About Weather Day-Of?
I work mobile, so weather matters. I'll either work under your garage, a canopy I bring, or reschedule if it's truly pouring sideways. Most PNW rain doesn't actually stop a job — but I'll be honest with you when I book if I think we should move dates.
Special Cases
You're selling the car
Detail it 1–2 days before listing photos. Doesn't matter what month it is — buyers shop visuals first.
You just bought a used car
Detail it immediately. You don't know what was in it before, and the previous owner's last clean was probably the day they listed it.
You have pets that ride with you
Every 6–8 weeks, regardless of season. Pet hair compounds and starts wrecking your interior fast.
You drive for work
Quarterly minimum. Your car is also your office.
