Water Spots: Why They Etch, and What Takes Them Off

Some water spots wipe off with the right stuff in two minutes. Others have eaten into the clear coat and won't wipe off at all. Here's how to tell which you've got before you scrub at it.

How do you get water spots off car paint?

If they're fresh, a careful wash and a mild acid like diluted white vinegar takes most of them off. If a ring is still there after that, the minerals have etched into the clear coat, and the only fix is machine polishing, which is paint correction. I'm Mikey, of Mikey's Mobile Detailing in Snohomish, WA. Text me a photo and I'll tell you which kind yours are.

You wash the car, it dries in the sun, and now there are little white circles all over the hood. Or the sprinkler's been hitting the driver's side all summer and that side never looks clean anymore. Same problem, different stage of it.

What a water spot actually is

Water isn't just water. Tap water, well water and sprinkler water carry dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. When a drop dries, the water leaves and the minerals stay, in a ring where the edge of the drop was. That's the white outline you see.

Rain spots are a little different. Rain picks up dust and pollution on the way down, and when it dries it leaves that behind instead. In spring it's pollen too.

Three kinds, and only one is a big deal

The two-minute test

Do this in the shade with the panel cool to the touch. A hot panel dries everything in seconds and makes it worse.

Gone? It was sitting on top. Do the rest the same way, a small area at a time, and rinse as you go. Still a ring? Look at it in the sun or under a flashlight. If you see the outline of the drop pressed into the shine, it's etched, and more vinegar or more scrubbing won't move it.

Don't let the vinegar dry on the paint, keep it off hot panels, and rinse it off when you're done. It's an acid. That's why it works, and also why you don't leave it there.

Things that make it worse

Why it happens so much around here

Sprinklers are the usual one: a car parked in reach of the lawn gets the same spots on the same side every day, all summer. Well water out in the county is often harder than city water, so those spots build faster. Then there's the classic: washing the car on the one sunny Saturday and watching it dry before you can get a towel on it. On the Mill Creek page I wrote about sprinkler spots on cars parked near the golf course, and the Lake Stevens page about well water. Same problem in every town I work.

What polishing does to an etched spot

An etched ring is a tiny low spot in the clear coat. A machine polisher takes the clear coat around it down a little until the surface is level again, so there's no edge left to catch the light. It's the same job as taking out swirls or a light scratch, which is paint correction. I check the clear coat's thickness with a gauge first, because it doesn't grow back. If you want to know how to tell a scratch that buffs out from one that doesn't, that's its own post.

Spots on the glass

Glass gets the same mineral rings, and the vinegar test works the same way on it. Glass is a lot harder than paint, so it takes longer to etch, but the side windows that face a sprinkler can get there. If they're still there after the vinegar, text me a photo and I'll tell you what I see.

Keeping them from coming back

What it costs to have it done

Spots sitting on top come off in an exterior detail (from $199 for a sedan), which includes decontamination, a clay bar and wax or sealant on the paint. Etched spots need polishing:

LevelFromTime
1-Step polish: light etching, swirls and haze$4006 to 8 hours
2-Step correction: compound, then polish$6501 to 2 days
Multi-Stage: years of sprinkler spots, or before a coating$9001 to 2 days

Each one is quoted for your car after I've seen the paint, and it's done in your driveway with your outdoor spigot and an outlet, which is how I keep the price down. If it's one side of the car that faced the sprinkler, a photo is usually enough for me to tell you which level it is.
