Why you can't see any of this in your driveway
A swirl mark is a scratch a few microns deep. It has walls, and those walls only throw light back at you from one narrow range of angles. Move outside that range and the scratch is optically invisible — not faint, invisible. That's why swirls appear as a halo wrapped around the reflection of a light source and disappear the moment the reflection moves on.
Under a cloudy sky, or a garage ceiling, or the diffuse light in a showroom, nothing is bouncing back at the right angle from anywhere, so the whole panel reads as clean. Roll the same car into direct sun and it looks like someone attacked it with a scouring pad. Nothing changed except the light.
This is the part of the job customers never see, and it's most of the job. A detailer holds an inspection light at roughly 5 to 15 degrees off the panel and works it around from several directions, because a defect that's invisible from one side is obvious from the other. That inspection is what decides everything that happens next — and it's what you just tried to do.
The seven things hiding in your paint
Each of these has its own optical signature. That's how you tell them apart, and telling them apart is what decides whether a panel gets polished, repainted, or left alone.

The line that matters is simple: if it's inside the clear coat, it polishes out. If it's through the clear coat, it needs paint. Polishing works by levelling a few microns of clear coat down to the bottom of the scratch. That only works while there's clear coat left above the damage, and a car only has so much of it — which is why a good detailer measures, and why "just buff it" is how paint gets ruined.
The uncomfortable part
Almost all of the swirl marks on almost every car were put there by cleaning it. Automatic washes drag grit across the paint under pressure. Dish soap strips protection and leaves the surface bare. One dropped towel picks up enough grit to write its way across a whole panel. Wiping in circles turns one scratch into a halo that catches the light from every direction at once.
None of that shows up in your driveway. It shows up the first sunny day after, and by then it's a month of washes old.
A paint correction levels it back out. A ceramic coating is what stops it coming straight back, because it puts a harder sacrificial layer between the grit and your clear coat.
How the test works
A car is generated from today's date, so everyone playing on the same day inspects the same paint with the same damage in the same places. You get an inspection light and 75 seconds to find as much of it as you can, and every defect behaves the way its real counterpart does — deep scratches announce themselves from a distance, holograms hide unless you cross them, and orange peel only ever shows up inside the reflection.
Then you make the call on what you found. Finding damage is half the skill; knowing what it costs to fix is the other half.
